SPARTANS 1 vs LEGAL HEAD 1
SPARTANS: Goals: Jonathan Allard Assists : none
LEGAL HEAD: Goals: Paul Lewis Assist: none
Saturday saw the Head facing one of the league winning favourites Spartans. Having recently seen our long unbeaten run (2 months by my reckoning) broken by a lucky Revo side, it was crucial that we had the numbers for this big game. The stage for this couldn't have been any better, Saturday night, under the splendour of the Kings Park floodlights in front of a huge crowd of at least 10, not including the grounds man. However, with a few key players missing, along with Tunners also opting out, it was starting to look bleak. The list of 16 quickly dwindled to 11 before a couple of late appearances made it up to an almost respectable 14.
The first half was reasonably well fought out by both sides, not many chances at either end. The LH back line, exuding the sorts of speeds that would make sloths proud, was being fantastically well marshalled by Jim who was solid throughout the match, and most of the Spartan attacks were snuffed out. Dennis also played superbly well, covering a number of times at the back, when somehow their pacey wingers seemed to out pace yours truly. I guess I'm losing my pace as I'm getting older...... although there was one moment, when the crowd was treated to a one man stampeding herd, as I rumbled forward at what some, but not many, may call pace.
Having had a superb solid display from the back line, it was somewhat disappointing to go in at half time 1-0 down courtesy of a cross. Clearly Soni was out to impress me as he took a page out of my cross handling skills and let it creep into the back post. Couldn't have "Ken"ed it better myself.
Of course at moments like these, what was needed was a reassuring comment from somebody at half time that we could claw this back that we weren't playing too badly. Up stepped Mr. Lewis, with his you're all a bag of sh*te and I've seen better from Sunderland speech. Although as eventual man of the match I suppose we'll let him have his rant.
The second half was pretty much more of the same, maybe more clear opportunities fell Spartans way, but some superb football was being played by the Head in the middle of midfield. However, our leading top scorer, Mike, was looking a little out of sorts up front. So who would step up to the plate and take over from Mike?? Our own Gazza, Paul Lewis of course. A pinpoint low bouncing cross aimed directly at the post, rolled along the line before nestling into the corner off the other post. Good thing Paul spotted that we were using round posts, before aiming his free kick. 1-1 which was how it was to finish.
Unfortunately the game was slightly marred by some disgraceful play towards the end. Clearly in contravention of rule 23b sub rule i, Spartans utilised a young fast player, Jeff, against a lumbering elephant, me. The afore mentioned rule clearly states that "any attempt by a fast, nippy young player to go around a tired fat man, especially in the last minute of the game, shall be punished by a yellow card to the afore mentioned fast, nippy player." However, the referee clearly hadn't read the rules and somehow declared my legitimate attempt at playing to the rules by stopping the run, as being unfair. How I got a yellow card I'll never know.
Great game from everybody who turned up, especially the new guys. I'll leave you all to decide whether Rob leaving at half time, and us then going on to turn a loss into a point winning situation was coincidence. :D
Goal scorer Paul Lewis, no assist and obviously no clean sheet.
Ken.
In short a peculiar outcome. Apart from a 15 - 20 minute spell in the second half Spartans completely dominated the game in all departments.
With controlled aggression the defence was extremely solid, cannot think of any headers or tackles lost by Gary and Pablo in the centre. Pravin, Ean and Jeetu were also extremely solid on the flanks. Special mention to Ean who was so committed that he literally ran his guts out with a technical chunder on the sidelines. The central midfield duo of Neil and Oggie produced some excellent moves and ran the show, Andrew also played well int hat position when he came on. Dancefloor put in some great work on the right flank, with goal attempts, crosses and people literally bouncing of the barrel chested man from the west Country. Kishor and Patrick worked hard on the left flank playing out of position. Flabbo and Maverick had plenty of chances up front and were too much for the Legal Ho defence. In short the number of chances went into double figures and we should have put Legal Ho out of their misery in the first half. We managed to get ahead through a wonder "Koncheskyesk" goal from dancefloor and Legal Ho only had one real chance from a freekick and scored. Better luck next week against BOC at Aberdeen.
