Revolution 2 vs JLeaguers 2

Revolution: Goals: Chris Marshall, David Jessop Assists :Dave Jessop, Terry Graham

JLeaguers:Goals: ???? Assists :????

For the first time this season, Revolution managed not to lose having conceded the 1st goal.  In fact, the Revo came back from 2 down with 10 minutes to go and almost won the game.  It was no more than Revo deserved, having dominated the first 20 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the game.  The draw puts JLeaguers through to the Champions League semis and good luck to them.  They’re a nice bunch of lads…

The Revo started brightly and perhaps should have taken the lead, missing a few good chances and seeing their keeper enjoy a couple of slices of good luck.  Vinny, back from his hamstring injury, was clean through after 5 minutes but opted to square the ball rather than go head down for goal.  Soon after, a corner got headed to the edge of the box. The Guv’nor’s subsequent half volley looped over the out-rushing defenders, bounced and then clipped the top of the bar (bizarre!).  Then, some completely unrehearsed throw-ins found their way to the far post begging for a fox-in-the-box to make contact.  Dave Jessop got on the end of one of these throws but showed that he is human by inexplicably heading over the bar from a yard out.  Revo’s last clear-cut chance in the opening period was when a ricochet from a JLeaguers defender lead to the ball going vertically 30 feet in the air.  The ball had snow on it when it came down and bounced off the top of Vinny’s head.  He did well to direct the ball goalwards only to find the goalie’s outstretched right leg deny him and the Revo an opening goal.

JLeaguers then came into it and took the lead from a set piece.  Sloppy defending and a mix-up lead to a JLeaguers attacker getting to a hopeful ball first and square the ball for a simple tap-in for his teammate.  After the first goal went in, the JLeaguers resorted to safety first tactics as their defence abandoned the high line and dropped deep.  From then on in, the JLeaguers played keep-ball and were in no real rush to score a second.

The JLeaguers continued to boss the game at the start of the 2nd half, winning most of the loose balls and breaking quickly from midfield and down the wings.  Their 2nd goal did have an element of good fortune about it, though, as the Revo defence appealed to the ref for handball, having seen their centre forward appear to control the ball with his hand before scoring from close range.  To be fair, the ref and linesman were unsighted and the goal was not undeserved or against the run of play.

Revolution heads did not go down and the Revo received a lifeline from Chris Marshall who scored from close range during a goalmouth scramble caused by good work from Dave Jessop.  The Revo continued to press and were rewarded with a superb goal from Dave Jessop, his 10th in 7 games and possibly our best.  After good hustle from Mayur had caused the JLeaguers right winger to lose possession, Terry picked up the ball and ran half the length of the field, before delivering a pinpoint cross which Dave volleyed home from about 10 yards.  The Revo, in the ascendancy, continued to press forward for a winner but could not make another breakthrough in the last 5 minutes.

All in all, it was one of those funny old games where both sides came off the pitch with just cause to feel disappointed not to take all 3 points.
