Message From Chairman
Welcome to the 2006/2007 Legal League Season!

A lot has happened over the summer break, so I thought prior to the season kicking off, I should update you all on some of the developments (and things we have in the pipeline):

1.    New Season, New Teams!

The new season kicks off in a few weeks time and the biggest news is that the League is expanding from 7 to 9 teams this season! The two new teams may be familiar to some of you from the friendlies scene, they are HKAE (run by Eric Woo) and the J'Leaguers (run by Yozo Kayamori). Let me be the first to welcome them to the League. I'm sure they'll both be worthy additions.

Also, just a note, but details of the subs to be paid by each team for the new season will be sent around shortly. We expect it to be in the region of around $3,000. That money, of course, goes solely toward pitch bookings, trophies and if there's a surplus, a couple of functions for all members of the League.
2.    Fixtures and Pitches

More good news! Both of our new teams have access to pitches (including Happy Valley), so we are hopeful of being able to organize more regular games at better venues this season. In addition to Happy Valley, we are confident of being able to book pitches at Aberdeen and we're also looking at introducing Friday night fixtures at Sandy Bay. Based on our experience of turn-outs for friendlies on a Friday night, we're confident most teams will be able to get a team together for a 7.30 or 7.45 kick off on a Friday night (provided the game is played on the Island), leaving plenty of time to get down to LKF/Wanchai or back home to the family afterwards!

Lou will shortly be circulating a fixture list for August and September. Obviously with the new teams being admitted to the league, we need more pitches, so we're making a concerted effort to get as many pitches as possible this season.(Many, many thanks to Henry Vera for his efforts in that regard!)

3.    A New Website!

Ok, so it's not quite up and running yet ('it is now'), but we are in the process of organizing a Legal League website at www.legalleague.net, so stay tuned! Lets face it, we're always wasting time at work surfing the web and while a League website may not be as interesting as some of the other pages we all frequent, we figured it may help to pass the time every now and then!

The website will contain all the usual features - tables, statistics, match reports, photos and a message board. Of course, the site will only be as good as the contributions we all submit to it, so please submit a heap of photos (including action both on and off the pitch!), match reports and anything else that may be of interest! Each team will also be asked to submit a brief history of the team and a team emblem for their section of the site.

4.    Sponsorship

The Committee is also in the process of obtaining a few new sponsors for the League. Basically it was decided that whilst some teams have fairly successful individual sponsorship arrangements in place already, each and every member of the League deserves cheap food and drinks from some of our favourite bars, so we are in the process of approaching a few bars in Lan Kwai Fong, SOHO and Wanchai to sponsor the league and provide discount cards to all players. We'll keep you posted.

5.    Administration

Finally, on the (somewhat boring) administrative side of things, a new 'Executive Committee' has been appointed to run the League.

As many of you know, Lewis Man has almost single-handedly kept this League going for the last few years by organizing pitches, arranging fixtures and dealing with all administrative issues. Having now been involved in organizing the League for the past few weeks, all I can say is that I'm not sure too many of us realize the amount of time and effort Lou has put in to make sure we can all have a decent game of football on a Saturday arvo. Lou, all I can say is thanks for all your hard work.

Basically, it was decided that going forward we'd need 3 or 4 people to do all the work Lou had been doing, so we formed a committee to run the League!  Introducing the infamous 4 - The Committee Members are myself (Chairman), Henry Vera (Treasurer), Chi Sam Mann (BOCs) and Stephen (Spike) Mantle (PAFC). Lou has kindly offered to stay on and assist the Committee as Fixtures and Statistics Officer and Dave Yip is going to take on the role of Registration Officer and keep track of who is playing for who! As has always been the case, we encourage all members of the League to have a say in running it, so please let us know if you have any comments, suggestions or downright criticisms!

                                        oooOOOooo

Well, that's enough for now as its nearly 'beer o'clock' on a lovely Friday afternoon, but let me once again welcome you all to the 2006/2007 Legal League Season.

It's an exciting time for the League with Champions League semis coming up and new teams being welcomed, so I'll look forward to seeing a lot of you over the coming weeks!

Cheers
AS
